It’s funny how different groups of people can view the same experience from totally different perspectives. For experienced SCUBA divers, exploring the depths of the ocean with its abundant flora and sea life is a totally stimulating adventure. For novices who long to discover the joys that this activity inspires in others, it can be a scary, even paralyzing experience. We see it as a chance to explore and interact with a totally new environment. So, if you’re thinking of taking the plunge, here are the best scuba diving tips for beginners that will keep you safe and help you enjoy your experience.
- Ask questions: When it comes to SCUBA there is a lot to learn. If you feel overwhelmed at any point during your first time dive in Maui, don’t hesitate to ask one of our instructors. Not knowing can be dangerous; knowing can help you stay safe and increase your enjoyment.
- Be prepared: No one expects you to perform as well as long time divers but you can do things to prepare yourself. Several months prior to your first dive, practice holding your breath underwater for increasingly longer periods of time. Also, remember to warm up and stretch before diving.
- Double check your equipment: Checking your equipment prior to diving will give you greater confidence once you are underwater. Check for broken bucks, strange smelling/tasting air, leaks and faulty gauges. All of these can cause problems while you are submerged.
- Don’t panic! Panicking in the water can quickly lead to serious problems for you and for fellow divers. If you should encounter an emergency try to stay calm and get the attention of your instructor or group you are diving with. Learn non-verbal diving signals so that you will have a fallback in the event of an emergency.
- Dive in a group: Experiencing your first time dive with a group of fellow novices will increase your confidence and enjoyment.
There is so much to see in the wondrous world beneath the ocean surrounding Maui from coral to mini-sharks to sea turtles, etc. It really is a shame that relatively few people have explored this ocean frontier.
