How Young is Too Young?

Here at Maui Scuba Mike we offer family friendly dive tours Maui for ages
10 and up. However, we do have a few options that are for 12 and up or 15 and up
depending on the tour. Safety is our number one priority and we want to make sure
that we provide age appropriate tours. Some dive tours start as young as 8, but we
feel it is too young for safety concerns. Age 10 is considered a generously young age
but is ultimately up to the parent to determine the child’s readiness. The parent will
want to make sure that their child is physically, mentally, and emotionally able to
take on the task of scuba diving.
Children have a natural curiosity about the ocean and it is fun to captivate
their innate interest. They may also be learning a great deal about the ocean and
ocean life in school and it’s amazing to allow them to witness it all in real life. If
parents are considering allowing their child under 12 to scuba dive they will want to
ask the following questions.

  1. Do they want to learn? Forcing a child into scuba diving is a sure fire way to
make sure they do not succeed. It can actually be dangerous if the child is not
genuinely interested in learning to scuba dive because they will not take it
seriously or pay adequate attention to the safety regulations.
  2. Are they medically fit? Make sure that your child has no underlying health
concerns that would interfere with diving.
  3. Are they comfortable in the water? Making sure they are strong swimmers
and enjoy being in the water is extremely important.
  4. Do they have sufficient attention span? There will be a significant amount
of information they will need to pay attention to. If they are unable to pay
attention this will create a large safety concern.
Some children will be ready at 10 and some 12 year olds may not be ready
just yet. It is important that each child is evaluated for maturity and ability. If you
have any questions regarding family friendly dive tours Maui we would be happy to
    help!
