What You May Not Know About Maui
Maui is a popular tourist destination every summer particularly if you are looking into Maui scuba diving. However, many families decide to visit during the “off season” such as the winter making Maui a popular destination all year long. There are many reasons people visit Maui outside of Maui scuba diving, the beautiful beaches for one, the spectacular views, warm climate, and general relaxing vibe are some of the highlights. There are a dozen or so reasons that make Maui so special. Below are a few things that you may not already know about one of your favorite destination spots.
- Second largest of the Hawaiian Islands: Maui is roughly 727 sq. miles in total making it the second largest next to the Big Island.
- Home to one of the world’s largest dormant volcanoes: Surprisingly, Maui only has two volcanoes and they are both dormant. Maui no longer has any active volcanoes. Haleakala is the largest dormant volcano on Maui and one of the world’s largest as well.
- Valley Isle: Valley Isle is a nickname that was given to the island of Maui because it is located between two mountains.
- Multiple pineapple farms: The various pineapple farms are popular tourist destinations. You should try and check out each one separately if you can to see how similar and different they are. At the very least you will want to make sure you stop by one while you are in town for some spectacular fresh pineapple!
- Humpback whales: Every year from around December to April the warm winter waters bring in about 10,000 humpback whales.
- Third largest population in Hawaii: There are roughly 117,600 residents on the island of Maui making it the third most populated in Hawaii.
