Underwater Photography Tips

Taking photos of the undersea world is a dream for many professional and amateur photographers around the world. Not only does it introduce challenging elements like lighting, but the unrestricted freedom of water brings an entirely new dimension to photographs. Scuba diving provides a great opportunity to take photos of some of the most beautiful underwater landscapes around. Here are a few tips for taking underwater photographs.

Master the Water- To take the best photographs, you need to be able to move through the water safely yourself. Consider getting PADI certified in Maui which gives you the opportunity to not learn how to maneuver yourself in the water, but you will also have the chance to take some great photos.

Be aware of depth- We aren’t just talking about how deep you dive, but rather to make sure you understand how your lightsource will change. There is a good chance that you will need to adjust your camera again as you go deeper underwater.

Zoom in- Always be mindful of the fact that you are not in your own home when it comes to taking pictures of sea creatures. Take care to make sure that they are safe and watch how close you get to avoid damaging the delicate marine life around you. A good zoom feature will give you the focus you need while still allowing you to be at a safe enough distance.

Timing is everything- Especially if you are shooting in a new location, make sure to speak to an expert about what time of day (or night!) is going to be best for capturing photos. Many underwater photographers choose to venture out when the sun is at its highest point and therefore providing the most light in the water. Prior to going out, make sure you have eaten and are hydrated.

Having clear water will also make a big difference in how your photos will turn out. The waters in Maui are clear and beautiful and we receive lots of sunlight making us a popular destination for photographers.
