Learn about Fins!

There are all kinds of funny pictures of people waddling around on dry land wearing fins prior to getting in the water. While they look funny out of the water, in the water fins are a necessary part of your scuba gear.

Fins are important because they provide you with an easy way to move through the water without having to exert much energy. The design of the fins, although simple in appearance, have been carefully done to create force and allow you to move through the water without using much leg strength. This directly correlates to how much air you will use during your dive. If you are exerting more energy then you will need to take more breaths to match your heart rate but fins allow you to glide practically effortlessly through the water.

There are generally two types of fins; full foot fins and open heel fins. Full foot fins are ideal for dives in warmer tropical waters and for snorkeling. The limited space means that when you wear these, you will likely go barefoot or opt for fin socks which are made of a thin neoprene material. Unlike their counterparts, these fins are flexible and lightweight. The stiffness of the fins depends on the amount of gear that needs to be moved with you in the water. If you are diving in colder waters then an open heel fin is the better option.

Made of stronger materials, open heel fins are designed with the opening at the back and then an adjustable strap. Before you go and purchase or put on open heel fins, make sure you have your dive boots. Dive boots protect your feet from getting cut, blisters, and provide ankle support underwater. To maximize the effectiveness of your fins, then it is also important to pay attention to the blade.

Both styles of fins come in different blade forms. The blade is the extension of the fin which can vary in size, shape, and even color. Standard fins are also known as paddle fins and are flat allowing for each kick to move you forward. The next level up are vented fins which have small circular holes in the middle of the foot pocket and allow for an additional propulsion on the recovery kick.
