Adventure Log / January 2016 / By Scuba Mike
As a child i discovered a film series on television, it was centered around a scuba diver and explorer who traveled the world and shared his adventures through film. The scuba diver was the most inspiring person I had ever encountered and he captured my attention. He was connected to the ocean environment and sea life, his name was Jacques Cousteau.
Little did I know at the time, that he would shape the future of my life.
I began experiencing vivid dreams of underwater worlds where I was the protagonist of the story. In these dreams I was making friends with turtles and dolphins, swimming with giant manta rays, sharks and even gargantuan sized whales.
Getting my feet wet
As soon as I was able to, I started scuba diving. My first dive was in 1973 at the Spanish island of Ibiza in the Mediterranean. I explored dive sites all over Europe and North Africa. My favorite dive locations were the Canary Islands on the Atlantic ocean. I was captivated by the world underneath the surface and was under the spell of the ocean.
The more I explored the ocean the more I discovered how little I knew and how much more there was to see and learn. As humans we are very limited by what we can experience in the ocean, the more time we spend in the water and the more that technology advances, the more we learn. I had to see more, I had to be part of the ocean exploration.
As I began to gain in experience, I tested myself to go further and dive deeper. My skills improved I met knowledgeable and gifted divers. I began to discover other people who were just like me, ocean minded. Passionate about ocean exploration and living life for new experiences. One day while speaking with a master scuba diver, he began elaborating on dives in far off and remote islands in the middle of the Pacific ocean. Filled with exotic wildlife and alive with coral formations and crystal clear water like he had never seen before.
