The Spotted Moray Eel

If you have been looking at Maui scuba diving you have likely been
wondering what sea life you will be experiencing during your dives. One of these
fabulous creatures is the spotted moray eel. This eel ranges in size from medium to
large and has a snake like body structure. When held in captivity they can only be
kept until their body size no longer allows it. There are a variety of other names that
the spotted moray eel also goes by including: conger, spotted eel, red moray,
speckled moray, white cong, white jawed moray, white-chinned moray, and the
white-jawed moray eel.
While this can be a marvelous creature to observe, you will want to observe
with care. The spotted moray eel can have a dangerous bite because of the way it
pulls back when he bites down. Their bite also releases a variety of toxins that can
be very dangerous to humans. This eel is normally observed during the day where it
can be seen eating crustaceans and other fish near the bottom of the ocean. These
eels are generally solitary animals and enjoy hiding in small crevices. The spotted
moray eel lives around 10-20 years and has terrible eyesight. To make up for its lack
of vision the spotted eel has a wonderful sense of smell to help it capture its prey.
