The Green Sea Turtle
One of the most magical creatures that you will encounter during Maui scuba diving is the green sea turtle. Unfortunately this creature is classified as endangered. With only 85,000 – 90,000 of them left we need to help keep them protected. Like most sea turtles they travel long distances during their lifetime. They have few natural predators but they include: large sharks, especially the tiger shark, and killer whales. Sea turtles help to maintain healthy sea grass beds and coral reefs, providing real benefits to the ocean’s ecosystem. This is one of the many reasons we need to work on protecting the green sea turtle.
If you ware looking into Maui scuba diving you will want to make sure that you locate green sea turtles during your dive. As one of the few sea turtles that are complete herbivores, the green sea turtles have a diet consisting of sea grass and algae. They can also live for more than 70 years! Below are a few of the most common places that you can locate green sea turtles.
- Maken Landing
- Maluaka Beach
- Keawakapu Beach
- Ulua Beach
- Ka’anapali Beach’s Puu Kekaa
- Kapalua Bay
- Honolua Bay
