Should Children Scuba Dive

If you are considering Maui scuba diving you may be considering it for the whole family.
Scuba diving is a great family-fun activity, but you want to make sure that safety is a priority.
Depending on the age and maturity level of each family member you may need to wait until
everyone is mature enough to handle themselves in the water. Maui Scuba Mike will take
children as young as 10 years old, but it is important that their parents address the following
questions first.
 Do their children want to dive? Children have a natural curiosity for the underwater
world and to learn about their surroundings. However, parents need to make sure that
their child has a real desire to learn to scuba dive so that they take the process seriously.
 Are they mentally ready? Parents need to verify that their child is mentally ready to
prepare for all that is involved with their first dive.
 Are they physically capable of swimming? Is the child a capable and confident
swimmer? If they are not, they will need to wait until they develop these skills a bit
further.
 Can they follow safety rules? Following safety rules is extremely important when it
comes to scuba diving and children need to be prepared to learn and pay attention so
that everyone stays safe.
Sometimes a 10-year-old can be more mature and capable of a successful dive than a 12 or
even 13 year old. For this reason, it is extremely important that parents evaluate their own
children as they know them best for dive readiness. Maui Scuba Mike accepts children as
young as 10 for guided dives and as young as 12 for night dives. Scuba Mike does offer
scooter dives with a dive propulsion vehicle (DPV) but students must be 15 or older in order
to participate.
