Scuba Facts
Maui scuba diving is a wonderful activity to partake in during your vacation to Maui. Many tourists visiting Maui participate in their first scuba dive during their vacation. However, there are other divers that participate in various dives all throughout the year. Once you complete your first dive you will realize how adventurous and addicting it will be and likely participate in many more in the future. Below is a list of several things that you may not know about Maui scuba diving or diving in general!
- It’s an acronym: SCUBA itself is an acronym that stands for Self Contained Breathing Apparatus.
- Deepest scuba dive: A 41-year-old Egyptian named Ahmed Gabr dove more than 1,000 ft setting the record for the deepest scuba dive. It only took him 12 minutes to dive this deep but 15 hours to return to the surface.
- Explore all environments: There are very few places that scuba divers have not been over the course of history. Some of these unique places include shipwrecks, coral reefs, lakes, or even flooded land mines. There are an infinite number of places that you can visit once you establish your diving skills.
- Lack of color: Underwater there is increasingly less light the further down you go. Color reflects off of light so where there is less light there is significantly less color.
- Sound travels faster: Underwater sound travels five times faster than it does above water.
