More Tips for Shooting Amazing Underwater Pictures

Just as the underwater world is completely different from the above ground world we are all used to, underwater photography is a completely different creature than above ground photography. It takes, as actor Liam Neeson might say, a particular set of skills to become proficient. This paired with excellent diving skills, a creative eye and of course a waterproof camera, can lead to some inspiring photography. In this article, we’ll give you more tips for taking stunning underwater photos that you will be proud to show others.

  • Purchase a waterproof point-and-shoot camera: The right camera accounts for much when it comes to capturing the underwater world in pictures. Consider purchasing your camera from one of the top of the line brands such as Olympus or Nikon rather than going cheap. After all, you do not want your camera failing and causing you to miss once in a lifetime moments underwater.
  • Know your camera well before diving: You don’t want to be trying to figure how to use your camera’s controls while you are in the middle of trying to capture a unique moment. Go over its controls so that you will be able to capture fleeting moments during your dive.
  • Use the sun to your advantage: To create a dramatic effect in your pictures, try using the sun breaking through from the surface as your lighting. Then photograph your subject from behind spotlighting the contrast between the shadows formed beneath it and the sun’s rays.
  • Always consider safety: No matter how mesmerizing the underwater world may be at times, always remain aware of how deep you are diving, where your diver buddy is, as well as the readings on your dive computer.
  • Set your white balance to automatic if you are using a flash: Since your flash will provide additional lighting to your underwater image, you may wish to use your white balance setting so your pictures don’t look too bright. To do this, make sure that you go over your owner’s manual in order to make the necessary adjustments.

At the end of the day, creating really outstanding images is really difficult. You need to be innovative as you are trying to capture images that many others probably have before.
