Private Guided Shore Dives for Certified Divers in Maui

You’re already certified. You know how to dive. What you want from a Maui dive guide is simple: someone who knows these reefs better than anyone, picks the right site for the conditions that day, keeps the group small, and stays out of your way underwater — letting you actually dive.

That’s exactly what a guided shore dive with Maui Scuba Mike is.

What Makes This Different From a Dive Shop Tour

Most guided shore dives on Maui run 6 to 8 certified divers with one divemaster herding the group on a fixed route. You follow the leader. You see what everyone else sees. You surface when the slowest diver needs to.

With Scuba Mike, the group stays at two to four divers maximum. I’m a Master PADI Instructor with over 40 years of experience diving West Maui’s reefs — not a divemaster running a script. I choose the dive site the morning of your dive based on current conditions: swell, surge, visibility, and what the ocean is actually doing that day. If Mala Ramp is firing, we go to Mala Ramp. If conditions favor a different site, we go there instead.

Experienced divers tell me this is the best shore diving they’ve done in Hawaii. Not because of the sites — Maui’s reefs are world-class regardless — but because of the difference between a private local expert and a group tour.

What to Expect on a Guided Shore Dive with Mike

Before we enter the water, I’ll brief you on the site — what we’re likely to see, depth range, current conditions, and the plan. You’re a certified diver; you don’t need a full refresher. You need accurate local intelligence and a good plan.

Underwater, I lead but I don’t micromanage. I point out marine life, navigate to the most productive areas of the reef, and manage the dive profile. You dive. Typical bottom time runs 45 to 60 minutes depending on air consumption and depth. West Maui shore dives commonly reach 40 to 60 feet of visibility on good days.

Marine life you can expect: Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) are almost guaranteed at most West Maui sites. White-tip reef sharks, spotted eagle rays, large moray eels, octopus, reef sharks, and dense schools of endemic Hawaiian reef fish are all common. The old Mala Wharf structure hosts some of the best coral growth on the west side.

Dive Sites

I don’t lock you into one location. Depending on conditions the day of your dive, we may dive Mala Ramp and the old Mala Wharf structure, Airport Beach (Wahikuli), or other West Maui shore sites chosen for the best visibility and marine life that day. This daily site selection — based on real conditions rather than fixed schedules — is something large dive shop operations simply can’t offer.

Who This Is For

This guided shore dive is for certified divers of any experience level beyond Open Water. Whether you got certified last year and want to build confidence diving Hawaii’s reefs, or you have 500 logged dives and want a private local guide who knows every reef in West Maui — this is designed for you.

If you’re an experienced diver visiting Maui and you want to actually dive rather than babysit a group, book a private guided dive with someone who has spent 40+ years underwater in these waters.
